Public Speaking Tips: Anthony Robbins

by Laurie Wilhelm

Here’s a clip of Anthony Robbins on stage.

I’ve posted this as an example of an excellent public speaker. It’s one thing to read tips on public speaking and it’s another thing to see what makes a good public speaker. Take some time to watch this pro in action; note what he says, how he says it and what he does as he speaks.

Robbins has

  • a strong message that’s delivered using easy-to-understand language
  • good body language: pay attention to how he acts out the man on the street
  • a variety of facial expressions
  • direct but not piercing eye contact
  • changes in his tone of voice depending on what he’s saying
  • a rapport with the audience by bringing them into his speech by asking them questions. This makes the “speech” feel more like a conversation where he’s in discussion with the audience rather than speaking at them
  • avoided all use of filler words: “um” “ah” “you know”

All this adds up to a confident, interesting, dynamic speaker. Robbins didn’t achieve this level of speaking ability overnight. At the beginning of his career, he did hundreds of speaking gigs and built his ability over time (a short period of time mind you…).

It’s too bad that the clip doesn’t show Robbin’s full stature and onstage presence, but because he’s so good, you’ll feel it without seeing it.

I hope this provides you with some ideas on how you can improve public speaking in various area of your life.
