EYS Interpersonal Skills Survey: What Do You Do?

EYS Interpersonal Skills Survey: What Do You Do?

by Laurie Wilhelm

Last week’s social skills question read:

When you’re at a small social gathering or in a meeting and someone new comes into the room, are you more likely to

  • take the first step and introduce yourself.
  • wait for him to come up to you and introduce himself.
  • wait for someone else to make the introduction.

A whopping 73% said that they wait for someone else to do the introductions! 18% said they take the first step and 9% want the new person should come up to them and introduce himself.

It’s hard to approach someone you don’t know and introduce yourself. It’s even harder if you don’t know anyone in the group and you’re standing by yourself. If you’re already part of the group, it’s probably easier for you to be the one who not only introduces yourself but also introduces him to some other people.

Here’s a link to a previous post about the importance of being the person who welcomes newcomers and introduces herself as well as the benefits which come along with that outgoing action: The Unsung Social Skill.
